DEBT CANCELLATION FOR THE GLOBAL SOUTH
=
BETTER WORK CONDITIONS FOR EVERYONE!
WORKERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE AGAINST THE DEBT TRAP!
We, the workers of the world, unite in solidarity across borders, recognizing that our struggles are interconnected and that our collective action is the key to a just and sustainable future. As the global economy deepens its reliance on debt and exploitation, we, the workers of both the Global South and the Global North, challenge the power dynamics that privilege profit for the few to the detriment of the majority by demanding the cancellation of illegitimate debt for the countries in the Global South.
From May 1–4, 2025, we rise together for a Global Jubilee of Workers, a rebellion against the financial system that shackles our nations, commodifies our bodies, and poisons our planet.
WHO REALLY OWES WHO?
We declare that:
1. Debt is a tool of exploitation
The financial debts of the Global South, imposed by the global financial system, have entrapped entire nations, denying them the resources to thrive, protect their people, and safeguard their ecosystems. These debts are illegitimate—a consequence of colonial exploitation, unjust economic systems, and harmful extractivism. The Global South has contributed the least to the climate crisis, yet it bears the brunt of its devastation. Debt is a weapon used to perpetuate inequality and drive the further exploitation of people and the planet.
2. Debt cancellation is not only a financial matter but a moral and climate imperative
Debt means slashed wages and toxic mines in your backyard. True climate justice will never be achieved until we cancel the debts of the Global South. These debts continue to extract wealth from the countries that need it the most while perpetuating environmental degradation and social suffering. Debt cancellation is essential for achieving an autonomous transition to sustainable economies that respect the rights of workers, Indigenous peoples, and future generations.
3. Workers are the backbone of every economy, yet we are exploited and exposed to the effects of climate injustice
In the Global North and South, workers face a system that prioritizes profit over people’s safety, well-being, and dignity. Extreme weather events driven by the climate crisis are making workers increasingly vulnerable. The current laws meant to protect us are inadequate, often favoring corporations' interests over workers’ rights and lives. Workers are too frequently pushed into precarious employment, where health, safety, and climate protection measures are ignored. We demand better working conditions for all workers, no matter what corner of the world we are in.
4. Our struggles are interconnected
Workers in the Global North are also victims of exploitation. The same financial institutions and multinational corporations exploit cheaper labour and weaker regulations in the Global South, causing industry decline, wage suppression, and job insecurity in the Global North. The economic forces that drive debt and extract resources from the Global South also erode working conditions in the Global North by removing job opportunities. We stand together in this struggle because we are united in the fight against an unjust system that benefits the few while oppressing the many.
5. A just world is possible, and debt cancellation is the first step
The cancellation of debt is not just a moral act; it is an economic necessity for the survival and flourishing of all workers, regardless of where we live. When debts are cancelled, the economies of the Global South can thrive, creating better conditions for workers, fostering fair wages, and stimulating sustainable industries. The resources released by debt cancellation can be redirected to strengthen education, healthcare, social protections, food systems, and just transitions. By cancelling the debt, we will create a world where workers everywhere can live with dignity, where resources are distributed equitably, and where the climate is protected for future generations.
OUR DEMANDS:
1. CANCEL ALL ILLEGITIMATE DEBTS OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH!
-
Audit all debts! We refuse to pay for corporate bailouts or dictator loans.
-
Tax the rich, not workers: Make banks and billionaires pay for the crisis they created.
-
Reject debt swaps proposed by the same institutions that have brought all these injustices.
2. INVEST IN WORKERS, NOT BANKERS!
-
Universal labor rights: Ban outsourcing and nearshoring that foster cheap labor everywhere.
-
Secure better working conditions for all workers, including safety measures to protect workers from extreme weather conditions and the impacts of the climate crisis.
-
Foster climate jobs in public and self-determined renewable energy and land restoration.
-
A just transition for all workers, ensuring that the economic shifts needed to address the climate crisis do not come at the expense of workers’ rights, jobs, or livelihoods.
-
Free healthcare, childcare, and just pensions.
3. GLOBAL SOLIDARITY AGAINST EXPLOITATION!
Workers in the Global North: Fight the oppression that debt enables —your jobs are disappearing while the Global South is forced into sweatshops due to the illegitimate debts they are forced to pay.
Workers in the Global South: Mobilize for collective solidarity – our collective power is the key to change. We will unite across borders, industries, and sectors to demand justice.
All of us: Strike, occupy, and disrupt the financial machinery of debt.
JOIN THE JUBILEE OF WORKERS!
We will come together to demand change. From May 1 to 4, 2025, we will:
-
Join protests and strikes with the message: “Debt Cancellation for the Global South = Better Work Conditions for Everyone”.
-
Demand debt justice in your workplace and public forums
-
Engage in actions that highlight the links between debt, exploitation, and climate injustice and build momentum for a global movement for justice.
-
Signing our collective pettition
Debt cancellation is the first step, but we must also demand long-term, structural changes that put people and the planet before profit.
Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we can cancel the debts that bind us and build a future where all workers are valued, respected, and protected.
This is our call for justice, dignity, and solidarity for all workers in the Global South and North.
THIS TIME, WE WRITE THE RULES.
